Why Samskritam

India, though it has, as we have seen, more than 500 spoken dialects, has only one sacred language and only sacred literature, accepted and revered by all... however diverse in race, dialect, rank and creed. That language is Sanskrit and that literature is Sanskrit literature... the only quarry whence the requisite materials may be obtained for improving the vernaculars of for expressing important religious and scientific ideas. - Monier Williams

Vishva-Samskrita-Dinam - World Samskrita-Day

Every year, shrAvaNa-pUrNimA, or  the full-moon day in the month of shrAvaNa, is celebrated as vishva-samskrita-dinam.

This year, it falls on Saturday, August 16th.

Even as we celebrate this day as the World Samskrita Day, our fond hope and strong belief is that all 365 days of the year will be Samskrita-Days!

Adages exist that proclaim all of earth to be a family (vasudhaiva-kuTumbakam), the three worlds form one's habitat (svadEshO bhuvanatrayam), and so on.  These reflect universal thinking.  Along these lines, as we observe the day, we wish a fulfilling, prosperous and peaceful living for all mankind.

The Vedas are full of mantraas that express these sentiments.  The secret to achieving this objective is harmonious co-existence among man, beast and nature.

As you sow, so you reap - the more humane we are and the more giving we are, the more we will be surrounded by generosity of character among our fellow-humans.
